While this paper is addressed, principally, to fluid dynamicists these results should be of interest to physicists studying the liquid state and physical chemists interested in mixtures. This paper presents the results of density, viscosity, and electrical conductivity measurements for glycerol solutions of some alkali-metal halides at 25☌. This correlation can now be used at a given temperature to tailor make a mixture of prescribed kinematic viscosity. See Figure 1-3 for vapor pressure curve Viscosity at 25 C (77 F): my ex best. ![]() The constants a, b and c are tabulated in the paper as functions of temperature. The effect of volume concentration on the effective viscosity, electrical conductivity and pH were all monitored between the temperature range of 2070 o C. It is shown that all the data can be reasonably represented by the empirical correlation (ln ν m - ln ν w)/(ln ν g - ln ν w) = x g, where ν w, ν g and ν m are the kinematic viscosities of water, glycerol and the mixture respectively and x g is the mass fraction of glycerol in the mixture. and viscosity (c-d) at various weight percent xanthan gum added to the low water-glycerol ratio solution. Xylitol was not included here because the resulting solution when mixed with glycerol has a viscosity 23 times that of blood. Apart from comprehensiveness and comparative accuracy the present measurements expose serious errors in the limited data that were earlier available on such mixtures. Moreover, NaI is expensive, has safety and material discoloration concerns, and has been reported to affect non-Newtonian fluid behavior. But the resulting fluid density is well above blood. The measurements were made by using a series of Ubbelohde viscometers. Currently, water-glycerol is commonly used and sodium iodide (NaI) often added to increase the index of refraction without changing fluid viscosity. We have measured the kinematic viscosity of glycerol-water mixtures, for glycerol mass fractions ranging from 0 to 1, in the temperature range 10-50 degrees C.
